My Introduction To Public Education Issues

Public Education Issues

A lot of people become interested in the major issues in public education because of their political convictions. Perhaps they were raised in a family which values education above anything else, and want to do what they can to insure that everyone gets good schooling. Perhaps they have a strong feeling about one of the major public education issues such as the poor performance of American students in math tests or the high dropout rate in some high schools, and want to have their say. For me, it was always more immediate than this. Quite simply, I became interested in public education issues because I had extremely poor experiences in the school system while I was growing up.

A lot of people talk about inner-city public education issues, but few of them know what it is really like. I know, because I went to a city school. They were never enough textbooks in my classes, and often there weren't even desks for all the students. Many of my peers came from broken homes, and there was this overall depression among the kids. No one really expected to go anywhere with their lives, and as such they didn't apply themselves.

I was one of the lucky ones. For a while, I floated around, but eventually I got my act together. A teacher inspired me, and I ended up going to an online university to get my degree. After that, I did some more training at a local community college. Now I am involved in public education issues myself. I have made it my life's goal to make a difference In the lives of kids in neighborhood like the one I grew up in.

Although I am now a professional at a nonprofit organization, I didn't start out that way. As a matter of fact, almost everyone I know involved in public education issues began by volunteering. There are so many different ways to get involved, and all of them are important. You can become part of a parent teacher association, work as a volunteer tutor after school, Or get involved in school board elections. A public education issue isn't just something that affects kids in school nowadays. Our education system shapes the next generation, and therefore it affects all of us. By becoming involved in the school system, all of us can have our voices heard and, hopefully, help to create a brighter tomorrow.
